Un célèbre romancier veuf se bat contre la maladie au moment où il essaie d'éduquer sa fille de cinq ans, à New York. On retrouve celle-ci, vingt-cinq ans plus tard, à Manhattan, tentant de surmonter ses traumatismes d'enfance.
